5 MUST-SEES IN PRAGUE
If you like history, beautiful architecture, and beer, then look no further! Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, should be your next destination. Now, I was in Prague during Halloween. And being with Americans, this meant that a lot of our trip was based around that, so I won’t be doing my usual “2 DAYS IN” kind of set up. Instead, I’ll just share with you my highlights and the things you CANNOT miss (any time of year)! So here it is: 5 must-dos in Prague…
Climb up to the Prague Castle
Lace up those sneakers and get a move on people!!! Walk your way up through beautiful, colorful streets until you get all the way up to the castle grounds. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world. Most of the grounds are free to explore, and you’ll see how it’s kind of like a mash-up of different architectural styles. You’ve got the Romanesque-style from the 10th century to 14th century Gothic styles. It’s so cool to see it all together and really unlike any other place I’ve been too. AND PS you’ll have an amazing view of the city below. We did this with a guide from our hostel, but I think it’s something you’d be able to manage on your own too. Oh and when the sun goes down and you’re across the river gazing at this castle above? You can thank the Rolling Stones. WHAT? yeah, the Rolling Stones paid to have the lighting installed for a performance on the grounds. The same lights are used today!!!
Lennon Wall
In the Mall Strana neighborhood, get yourself to the Lennon Wall for a GREAT photo-op (no shame in the INSTA game). But now that it’s in the background of your photo, it’s only fair that you know the background story too. 1948 and beyond, people used the wall to protest communism. In the 60s, it was coined the “Crying Wall,” and people continued to share their grievances through text, lyrics, and art. Authorities continuously would paint over it. It wasn’t until December 8, 1980 that the wall really takes on the meaning that it has today. John Lennon was murdered, and locals went to the Crying Wall to express their sorrows. Unable to control it, the Knights of Malta legalized the graffiti in 1990.
Sandeman’s Free Tour
I think a tour is 100 percent necessary in every city you go to, but this tour was especially important. The knowledgeable tour guide will give you a brief history of the city and show you the main attractions of the beautiful city. The most interesting part, in my opinion, was going through the old Jewish quarter. Unlike most of its European neighbors, Prague’s Jewish quarter remained in-tact throughout WWII. This was no accident. In fact, the Nazis planned to use this area as a “trophy” of sorts to show future generations how they wiped out a whole race of people. Chilling to hear, I know. The unintended upside, though, is that visitors can now visit this neighborhood today.
Astronomical Clock
Prague’s astronomical clock was originally constructed in 1410 in one of the towers of the town hall. Every hour on the hour, you can see a little “show.” I put show in quotes because it’s not all that entertaining, yet I still think it’s something you should check off the list. Our tour guide suggested instead of looking up at the clock, turn around and watch people’s reactions instead. Expecting a Walt Disney production of the 12 apostles, tourists will stare up looking dazed and confused at the end result. It’s actually pretty entertaining, so hats off to my tour guide. You the real MVP.
Prague Boat Tour
Now if you’re in the dead of winter, probs best to skip this one… but if you’re in the spring, summer, or fall I’d definitely recommend the Prague boat tour! For an hour, you will enjoy the sights along the VLTAVA river such as the castle, Charle’s Bridge, and more during a beautiful sunset. We booked through the tour company (above) after our tour ended. This saved us a couple bucks and even got us a free drink and dessert!
All in all, Prague is a really beautiful and fun city, and I’d love to go back again soon! If you have any questions just comment on my latest instagram @planetochampagne!
